FORMS & WIDGETS - Text-entry boxes

Text-entry boxes are generally used when you cannot precisely predict what a user will enter (for example, first name, last name). They can be designed as single-line or multiline fields.

Single-field text-entry box:

Multiline text-entry box:

Text-Entry boxes should be used:

  - If it is more natural for the user to type the answer rather than select it, for example a zip code.
  - When you cannot precisely predict what a user will enter (for example, first name, last name).
Text-entry boxes should be free from disappearing text, a phenomenon occurs when the user's text entry exceeds the text-entry box size.
Text-entry boxes should be pre-formatted when appropriate. For example a phone number field is more usable when it is split into the required digit fields. This eliminates guesswork on the part of the user about what to enter.
