PAGE DESIGN & BRANDING - General Standards
Place the most important information above the fold.
Avoid horizontal scrolling.
Apply a consistent layout, design, color scheme to all pages of your site.
Avoid using too much white space. It’s important to also avoid clutter. Use white space to create distance between unrelated groupings.
Limit the use of animations.
Limit the use of scrolling marquees.

Limit the use of auto-background music or noise.

Use a liquid layout when possible. (no fixed-width pages – they may not display properly at different screen resolutions).

Limit or eliminate the use of textured backgrounds.

Use a high contrast text-to-background color; black on white is optimal.

Use %'s rather than fixed pixel numbers for page and table widths - this will adapt the webpage to different screen sizes and resolutions. It will also assist users with multiple browser windows open, and users of portable devices with small screens.

Format common items consistently (i.e. dates appear as mm/dd/yyyy, etc.).

Make sure push-button labels define the user's activity (Example: search button says “Search”, newsletter flash minisite button says “Sign-up”).

Make sure users can recover from errors (i.e. wrong click, etc) - don't make it difficult to return to previous pages.

Make sure all pages a user might want to save, like confirmation pages, are printer-friendly. Add a "Print this Article" to the TOP and BOTTOM of every article.

Avoid color backgrounds as this can make content difficult to read.

Be careful about the proportion of content to art, graphics, and ads on each page. An apparent lack of content will turn users away.

Leave adequate space between text and site borders/images (cell padding).

Avoid visual breaks like a line or rule as they discourage people from looking at items beyond the break.
